Moldova: 75 towns and villages have profited from EU support in switching to green energy since 2015

August 6, 2018

During the first half of 2018, some 19 new biomass-heating systems and seven solar hot water systems were installed in Moldova thanks to the EU-funded Energy and Biomass Project.

The Energy and Biomass Project in Moldova has financed the installation of 77 heating systems to provide heat for a total of 91 institutions, in 75 towns and villages, since 2015.

Speaking about the significance of the results of the project for Moldova, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, Vitalie Iurcu, said: “The diversification of energy sources is one of the priorities and our goal is to reach and strengthen the position of Moldova as a state promoting the use of ‘green’ energy by 2020. It is important to strengthen our efforts and undertake specific actions aimed at enhancing the country’s energy security, by upgrading the infrastructure related to the energy sector, improving energy efficiency, using renewable energy sources, as well as integrating the Republic of Moldova on the European energy market.”

The EU-funded and UNDP-implemented Energy and Biomass Project in Moldova is part of the EU4Energy Initiative and aims to contribute to the reliable, competitive and sustainable production of energy from biomass, which is the most viable and available source of renewable energy in the Republic of Moldova.

EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
