European Parliament holds open and frank dialogue with Azerbaijan

May 24, 2017

Members of the Committee on Foreign affairs (AFET) of the European Parliament, chaired by David McAllister, visited Baku on 22 May. The delegation of MEPs discussed the advancement of negotiations on a new EU-Azerbaijan agreement.

The delegation met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, First Vice-Chairman of the Milli Mejlis (National Assembly) Ziyafat Asgarov and Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Inter-Parliamentary Relations Samad Seyidov. The MEPs also met with civil society representatives and visited a camp for internally displaced persons in the Masazir settlement.

"Our visit is a demonstration of the resumption of an open and frank dialogue between the European Parliament and the Milli Mejlis”, said McAllister at the press conference. “The European Parliament is closely following the negotiations of the new EU-Azerbaijan agreement and, once the negotiations are over, we will be asked to give our consent to the deal. The parts of the agreement on our common values such as democracy, the rule of law, good governance, the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms — all these are equally as important as the parts on trade and sectorial cooperation."
