December 3, 2014

Donald Tusk, the new President of the European Council, has congratulated Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on the “successful installation” of the new government that “brings hope for further stepping up much needed political and economic reforms.” In a statement following his telephone call with Poroshenko today, Tusk welcomed the new cabinet’s “ambition to tackle the economic crisis through a robust reform process” and pledged the EU´s “readiness to continue standing by Ukraine in these efforts.”

Tusk shared with Poroshenko the EU´s concerns over the security and humanitarian situation. “We agreed on the need to pursue the peace process on the basis of the Minsk agreements,” said Tusk stressing the need for a political settlement “in full respect of Ukraine's territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.”  The European Council will stay seized of this matter and take appropriate action in light of developments, he added.
