EU to help strengthen State Audit Office of Georgia

December 18, 2017

Last week, the EU Delegation to Georgia held an event to launch a new project to help strengthen the institutional capacity of the country’s State Audit Office (SAO). The 24-month project, which formally began in May 2017, aims to further enhance the SAO’s independence and professional capacity and thereby contribute to improved accountability in the use of public funds.

“Over the last decade we witnessed a gradual transformation of the State Audit Office into a modern institution closer to best European and international standards,” said Vincent Rey, Head of the Cooperation Section at the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. “With EU support, the State Audit Office now delivers a better service to the public by fostering greater accountability and efficiency of spending institutions.”

The project is funded through the EU’s European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI) supporting democratic development, rule of law and good governance. It directly corresponds to sub-article 1.2 of the Georgia-EU Association Agreement, aiming “to contribute to the strengthening of democracy and to political, economic and institutional stability in Georgia”.
