EU support builds capacity of Azerbaijan in responding to natural disasters

February 25, 2016

The roles and tasks of national authorities in responding to natural and man-made disasters, effective reception, deployment and utilisation of international relief teams were the focus of an EU-supported seminar organised on 24-25 February 2016 in Baku. The event was held within the  EU-funded programme on the Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters in East Partnership countries (PPRD East).

Built on a scenario where a serious disaster caused by a natural hazard had occurred on the territory of Azerbaijan and led its government to request international assistance, the training exercise aimed to enhance the inter-institutional and inter-Ministerial cooperation in Azerbaijan in requesting civil protection assistance.

Participants from relevant ministries and state agencies participated in simulating negotiations, discussions of the national response mechanism to deal with the consequences of major disasters like earthquakes, floods and landslides. Together with the PPRD East experts, they also tested Azerbaijan’s arrangements for requesting international assistance, including border crossing, customs clearance, allocation of space for the establishment of camps, provision of fuel, escort to disaster affected areas and security.

The Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters in East Partnership Countries Programme is an EU-funded Flagship Initiative aimed at increasing disaster risk management capacities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
