EU steps up its efforts to counter disinformation

March 1, 2016

The EU's diplomatic service, led by High Representative Federica Mogherini, has since September last year had a dedicated East StratCom Task Force that, among other activities, is tasked with countering disinformation in Europe and beyond. The team has now launched a new product in their series of newsletters - the Disinformation Digest. The Digest analyses how pro-Kremlin media see the world and what independent Russian voices say. Every Friday, it shows key trends on Russian social media, so that readers can put pro-Kremlin narratives into their wider context.

This comes in addition to the already popular Disinformation Review, which is into its 17th edition this week. As stated on the web-site of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS), the Review collects examples of pro-Kremlin disinformation articles and stories from all around Europe. Every Tuesday, it gives readers the precise data on where disinformation has appeared, showing the trends of the week.

You can follow the EU-Disinfo campaign via Twitter @EUvsDisinfo or by subscribing to the above mentioned newsletters. For updates in English sign up here or for updates in Russian here.

The team is always looking for new contributors to the Disinformation Review from the EU Member States, Eastern Partner countries and beyond. If you are interested, please contact the team at stratcom-east@eeas.europa.eu.

The East StratCom Task Force was established following the March 2015 European Council, which "stressed the need to challenge Russia's ongoing disinformation campaigns". It focuses on the effective communication and promotion of EU policies towards the Eastern Neighbourhood; strengthening the overall media environment in the region; and improving the EU's capacity to forecast, address and respond to disinformation.
