EU looking to Azerbaijan for strategic energy partnership

July 22, 2015

Azerbaijan is a reliable and strategic energy partner for the EU, "and we want to take this partnership further", said European Council President Donald Tusk on a visit to Baku today.

Azerbaijan is a main partner in the EU's efforts to diversify its energy supplies said Tusk, stressing the commitment to developing the Southern Gas Corridor. "For Europe, it is a question of diversifying supply. For Azerbaijan, it is a question of diversifying demand."

He said Azerbaijan had the potential to become one of the EU's major commercial partners in the region, stressing that good governance and rule of law are important for creating a favourable commercial and investment climate.

Tusk also stressed the importance attached by the EU to human rights and fundamental freedoms, and said he had discussed with the President the EU's concerns with the detention of human rights defenders.

He said the EU supported the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, and had not recognised Nagorno-Karabach. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
