EU leaders welcome elections in Moldova, pledge support in advancing reform agenda

December 2, 2014

The EU welcomes the holding of parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova on 30 November, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Johannes Hahn said in a joint statement issued on Monday.
The statement quotes the OSCE/ODIHR´s preliminary conclusions that these elections "were characterized by a wide choice of political alternatives and were generally well administered, although the de-registration of one electoral contestant shortly before Election Day raised questions about the timing and circumstances".
The EU now looks forward to the swift formation of an inclusive and accountable government, as well as a constructive opposition, Mogherini and Hahn said, adding the EU “stands ready to continue its close cooperation with the Republic of Moldova on its path towards more transparency, rule of law and a stronger market economy.”
A new impetus to key reforms will be crucial for Moldova´s political association and economic integration with the EU, the statement said stressing the EU will remain a reliable partner supporting the country’s “reform endeavours and working towards unleashing the full benefits of the Association Agreement in the interest of all its citizens, wherever they live.”
The EU remains committed to work with the future government towards a comprehensive, peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova with a special status for Transnistria,” the statement concluded.
European Parliament President Martin Schultz has also welcomed “orderly parliamentary elections” in Moldova. “Ambitious European reform agenda now crucial for closer ties with the EU,” Schultz said in his tweet yesterday. (EU Neighbourhood Info
