EU and Moldova reaffirm association agenda

March 15, 2016

Yesterday, the EU and Moldova held the second meeting of the Association Council under the Association Agreement, where they reconfirmed common determination to implement commitments linked to the country’s  political association and economic integration with the EU. The EU Council reports that the full entry into force of the Agreement is forthcoming now that Moldova and all EU member states have ratified it.

The Association Council said that the current difficulties in Moldova should be solved “through a constructive dialogue between all political forces in the country”. The EU also encouraged Moldova to continue its efforts to pass the necessary laws, pursue the reform agenda. It reaffirmed its support to Moldova towards achieving these goals, adding that “tangible results on reforms are necessary to restore trust in Moldova.” The role and engagement of civil society in this process was highlighted by both sides.

Noting the substantial EU assistance provided to Moldova, the Council called on the country to make the best use of this assistance in order to deliver the reforms it has committed to under the Association Agreement and Association Agenda. The Council also stressed the need to step up efforts towards reaching “a comprehensive, peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict based on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova with a special status for Transnistria.”

As earlier reported by the EU Neighbourhood Info Centre, the EU had increased its assistance to Moldova, with up to EUR 410 million available for the period between 2014 and 2017. (EU Neighbourhood Info)
