Energy Community praises Ukraine on adoption of energy regulator law

September 27, 2016

The Secretariat of the Energy Community has congratulated Ukraine on its adoption of its energy regulator law on 22 September. The Energy Community Secretariat, which provided support to the Ukrainian authorities during the law’s drafting stage, congratulated the Ukrainian Parliament with this step forward.

The Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Mr Janez Kopač, said: ‘’I congratulate Ukraine on today’s adoption of the Regulator Law. Only a strong and independent regulatory authority can enforce energy market reforms and rules, thus ensuring open and non-discriminatory access to the market, investment in the energy sectors and protection of consumers. I trust this law will serve to overcome the existing independence shortcomings of the national energy regulatory authority.”

The Energy Community is an international organisation dealing with energy policy. The Treaty establishing the Energy Community brings together the European Union, on the one hand, and countries from the South East Europe and Black Sea region to extend the EU internal energy market to South East Europe and beyond on the basis of a legally binding framework.
