Belarus: EU supports women entrepreneurship

March 11, 2016

Belarus became one of the first countries to launch the EU-supported Women in Business programme, reports the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The programme is being implemented by the EBRD in all six Eastern Partnership countries to support women-led small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It is part of the EU regional framework initiative  that aims to promote women entrepreneurship and, more broadly, help women unlock their potential, strengthen their skills and encourage their participation in business.
According to the EBRD, the programme helps women-led SMEs by offering financing, technical assistance and business advice through local partner financial institutions. Several Belarusian banks expressed their interest in joining the Women in Business programme in the country as financial intermediaries.
The EU contributed over EUR 5 million to the programme that will last until 2022 and will be implemented in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. The rest of the funding is shared between the EBRD, Sweden and the Early Transition Countries Fund. The six Eastern Partnership countries are among the 16 countries where the programme operates.(EU Neighbourhood Info)
