Armenia to increase energy security and sustainable energy development

On 2 June, Yerevan hosted a seminar on renewable energy. The seminar focused on increasing energy security, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring sustainable energy development of municipalities. Representatives of 15 Armenian municipalities, including seven Covenant signatories, attended the seminar to learn about best practices in renewable energy generation, reduction in the cost of electricity for the population and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

Ms Astghine Pasoyan, Executive Director of the Energy Saving Fund (supporter of the EU-funded Covenant of Mayors in Armenia), highlighted the possibilities of financing municipal renewable energy projects in Armenia and presented an overview of the main activities to ensure sustainable energy development in Yerevan, set out in the city’s SEAP (Sustainable Energy Action Plan).

Mr Artem Kharazyan, national expert of the ‘Covenant of Mayors – East’ initiative in Armenia, presented statistical information on renewable energy use for local heat and electricity generation in the SEAP of European signatories and covenant signatories in Armenia, and also talked about renewable energy development in the country.

Participants were also briefed on the role of renewable energy and energy efficiency in the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the experience of the United Nations Development Programme in the implementation of municipal projects in Armenia.
