Global strategy on the EU's foreign and security policy: Council endorses priority areas

The European foreign affairs Council, meeting today in Luxembourg, discussed the follow-up to the EU global strategy on foreign and security policy "Shared vision, common action: a stronger Europe" and approved the priority areas of the strategy.
 
The work on implementation of the EU global strategy is expected to focus on five priority areas for 2016-2017: 
 
·       Resilience building and integrated approach to conflicts and crises; in particular in the EU's neighbours and in wider surrounding regions, including through the European Neighbourhood Policy and other EU instruments
·       Security and defence;
·       Strengthening the nexus between internal and external policies;
·       Updating existing or preparing new regional and thematic strategies;
·       Stepping up public diplomacy efforts.
 
The Council also highlighted the urgent need to focus on migration as well as counter-terrorism and hybrid threats. In addition, human rights, as well as women, peace and security and gender equality and women's empowerment will continue to be mainstreamed in all external EU policies.(EU Neighbourhood Info)
