Ukrainian film director and former Russia’s political prisoner received Sakharov Prize

On 26 November, Oleg Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director from Crimea who was imprisoned political activism received his 2018 Sakharov Prize at an awards ceremony hosted by the European Parliament.

Until recently, Sentsov was serving a 20 year prison sentence in Russia for “plotting terrorist acts” against Russian de facto rule in Crimea. He was released on 7 September 2019 following a prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.

The awards ceremony, during which Sentsov will address the European Parliament, will took place from 13.00 to 13.30 Eastern European time in the hemicycle in Strasbourg.
