Ukraine: School in Gola Prystan more energy efficient thanks to EU project’s support

December 4, 2017

Pupils at a school in the Ukrainian town of Gola Prystan will enjoy a warm and cosy winter this year, as their school building was recently thermally insulated and became more energy efficient. The thermal insulation works were conducted as part of the town’s participation in the EU-financed Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects.

The basement of the building, known as “School no. 1” through the project, has already been fully insulated and 90% of all windows have been replaced with energy efficient ones. Works on the insulation of the roof will be finished in the coming days. This means the school will head into winter with a warm roof and new energy-saving windows. The boiler house connected to the school has also been reconstructed. New solid fuel boilers will ensure heat supply to the school and kindergarten using renewable sources of energy. This will also help the town save energy and funds and be more ecologically friendly.

The Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM-DeP) programme is a European Union programme in the EaP countries which supports small towns that have signed up to the Covenant of Mayors initiative to implement energy efficiency projects identified within their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs), with grants as well as technical assistance. The support team of the CoM-DeP provides grants to 19 selected projects, as well as technical, procedural and communication assistance.
