Moldova: Cantemir to improve energy efficiency of schools and kindergartens thanks to EU support

February 12, 2018

The Moldovan town of Cantemir will make two public kindergartens and two schools more energy efficient as part of a project financed by the EU under the second round of Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects.

The project will start in April 2018 and will be implemented over the course of the next three years. It is planned that the facades of the buildings will be insulated and a special heat monitoring system will be introduced, which will improve the energy management of the public buildings. The two schools and kindergartens will have biomass heating systems and solar panels installed, which will help switch to renewable energy. As a result, this will help the local administration to not only improve the conditions for the children, but also save money on heating and be environmentally friendly.

Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects (CoM-DeP) are part of the EU4Energy initiative. EU4Energy covers all EU support to improve energy supply, security and connectivity, as well as to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern Partner countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). It does this by financing projects and programmes that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption. Over the long term, this makes energy supply more reliable, transparent and affordable, thus reducing energy poverty and energy bills for both citizens and the private sector.
