First prison-based therapeutic community opens in Moldova

December 6, 2017

On 29 November, a “therapeutic community” was opened in Pruncul prison in the Republic of Moldova. This initiative – the first of its kind – is supported through an EU-funded project and aims to empower prisoners to overcome their drug dependence while further improving the human rights situation in prisons.

“This ambitious and noble project will be a further successful and much needed drug dependence treatment programme in the Moldovan prison system”, said Moldovan Deputy Minister of Justice Anatolie Munteanu at the opening ceremony.

The “Criminal Justice Responses to Drug Dependent Prisoners” project, which is part of the joint Council of Europe and European Union programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, supported the refurbishment of a prison ward and training of prison staff and social workers. This work has been carried out in cooperation with the Department of Penitentiary Institutions of Moldova’s Justice Ministry.
