July 10, 2018

On 5 July 2018, the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and the EU4Energy Governance project conducted the First Meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group on the Long-term Energy Strategy of Azerbaijan.

The development of the Long-term Energy Strategy is one of the top priorities in Azerbaijan in relation to the ongoing reforms in the energy sector. The Deputy Minister of Energy, Samir Veliyev, welcomed the continued support of the European Union.

The ongoing energy reforms in Azerbaijan currently include the adoption of two new legislative acts: the Electricity Market Law and the Energy Efficiency Law. The latter was developed with the assistance of the EU4Energy Governance project, demonstrating that the European Union continues to play an essential role in reforming the energy sector in Azerbaijan.

At the meeting, the Counsellor of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Mr Erik Somelar, stressed the importance of the inter-ministerial cooperation and invited all relevant stakeholders to contribute to the development of this important document.

The event is part of the EU4Energy Initiative of the European Union. The Energy Charter Secretariat is an implementing partner responsible for delivering technical assistance to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus.
