EU supports construction of new solar plant in Ukraine

February 9, 2018

A new 36-megawatt solar plant will be installed on the site of a former chemical plant near the village of Ternovytsa in the Yavoriv district of Lviv region, western Ukraine. The construction of the plant is the first stage of a project supported by EU4Business and implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as part of its commitment to making the energy mix in its countries of operation greener.

Under the agreement, which was signed on 8 February in Lviv, the EBRD will provide a 10-year loan and its partner, the Clean Technology Fund, will extend an 11-year loan to a company set up for the construction of the plant.

While the site of the former chemical plant is clean, it is only suitable for a construction such as this solar plant, said the EBRD in its press release.

Ukraine continues to rely on imported fossil fuels and many of its electricity generating plants are highly polluting. There is great potential for renewable energy in Ukraine, only a very small percentage of which is utilised at present.

This solar project has benefited from technical assistance by the EU4Business programme.
