EU opposes recent death sentence in Belarus

February 9, 2018

Today, the Delegation of the European Union to Belarus issued a statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in the country denouncing the death sentence given to Viktar Lyotaw in Belarus, saying that “the European Union holds a principled position against the application of the death penalty at all times and in any circumstances”.

The EU statement refers to the sentence handed down by the Vitsyebsk Regional Court on 22 September 2017.

“The death penalty violates the right to life and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment,” the EU statement added.

“Thus we call on the Belarusian authorities to commute the existing death sentences and to establish a moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its abolition,” the statement concluded.
