EU Monitoring Mission brings together journalists from breakaway regions and Georgia

December 4, 2017

Twelve journalists from territory controlled by Georgia and the two breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia met in the Armenian capital Yerevan for a workshop last week. The workshop aimed to ensure the continued flow of independent information across the region, and expand opportunities for dialogue and cooperation. All participants specialise in reporting on regional developments in their respective areas.

The seminar was organised by the EU Monitoring Mission Georgia, in cooperation with the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR).

The workshop participants were briefed on the current situation in relation to human rights and freedom of speech, paying particular attention to the role of social media in the South Caucasus region. The conflicts in the region and the challenges they pose to cross-border trade and cooperation were also discussed.

Finally, the journalists discussed the role of reporters in covering regional conflicts. The workshop provided many opportunities for participants to work in groups, sharing their own experiences with colleagues from across the region.
