2017 – a breakthrough year for cycling in Belarus

March 6, 2018

2017 was a breakthrough year for the cycling community in Belarus. Thanks to the EU-funded "Development of urban cycling for public benefit in Belarus" project, the country began developing standards for bicycle infrastructure, and traffic regulations are now being revised. The project is being implemented by the Minsk Cycling Community (MCC).

The local authorities in Belarus have started showing more interest in cycling development in the country and as a result, a new project is underway to create cycle lanes on the country’s roads. The Cycling Council has also been established in Minsk and, following the example of the capital, similar councils are now being created in other cities, including Hrodna, Brest, Mahilioŭ, Orša and Salihorsk. Experts from the MCC have been invited to participate in the process as consultants.

In January 2018, the country officially adopted the national concept of cycling development. The MCC was included in the working group and contributed to the proposals based on its experience in developing cycling in Minsk, where in 2017 it developed a strategic cycling plan for the Belarusian capital until 2020.
