Latvia to share with Ukraine its experience in conducting phytosanitary control of imported cargoes

June 12, 2018

On 11-15 June, experts from State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Production are visiting Latvia to learn about the EU’s phytosanitary border control system, control procedures and methods of cooperation between various services, based on the example of Latvia.

During the visit, special focus will be placed on the EU legislation and how wood packaging material is used in trade in Latvia. The visit is also an opportunity to get familiar with the process of selecting imported cargoes subjected to phytosanitary control, including the selection of samples, as well as the monitoring of the work of phytosanitary inspectors.

The visit has been organised by the European Commission’s Technical Assistance and Information Exchange Instrument (TAIEX), in cooperation with the Border Control Department of the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) of Latvia.

TAIEX is a demand-driven tool that supports partner countries with the adaptation of national laws, regulations and quality standards to match those of EU Member States in the framework of Cooperation or Association Agreements signed with the EU. In the Eastern Neighbourhood, TAIEX works with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.
